Crochet Ribbon Candy Ornament Pattern

This purple and white Crochet Ribbon Candy Ornament is probably one of my favorite ornaments to look at. It has such a beautiful color combination and shape that I just had to share it with you.

I remember seeing this brightly colored ribbon shaped candy in large Christmas bowls when I was little. It was so glossy and beautiful that I thought it was a decoration instead of a treat. As I got older I don’t remember seeing it outside of old movies. Then, a few years ago I saw it make a comeback and I must admit that I love it to pieces! No, literally I break it up and eat it in pieces… lol.

Since it’s such an iconic Christmas candy, much like the candy cane or peppermint, I decided to make a crocheted version to put on my tree. I very much wanted to capture the over all shape of the candy, but also the waves of color in the ribbon that make it so pretty to look at.

So, here’s how to do it.

Supplies

  • Yarn Any type is fine, as suggest a cotton if you want it to be a bit stiffer.
    • I used Peaches & Creme in white and boysenberry
  • Crochet
  • F/3.75mm hook
  • Snips
  • Yarn or tapestry needle

Abbreviations

  • Ch = Chain
  • Hdc = Half Double Crochet
  • Dc = Double Crochet
  • Sc = single crochet
  • Trc = treble Crochet
  • St = stitch
  • Sk = skip

Ribbon Candy Crochet Pattern

Here’s how to do a starting knot: Learn How To Crochet A Starting Knot

Foundation row. Ch 50. In purple.

Rows 1-3. Ch 1, put 1 sc in each st. 

Tip: use the back bone of the chain for row 1. if you want a neater look.

Rows 4. Change to white. Ch 1, put 1 sc in each of the next 21 st, sk 1 st, make 4 hdcs in 1 st, sk 1 st, sc in each of the next 12 sts,

Continued: put 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 trc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, put 1 sc in each of the remaining sts.

Ribbon candy is a traditional Christmas candy that goes back for centuries in Europe, though it is unclear exactly where the candy was first created.

Row 5. Ch 1, put 1 sc in each of the next 39 sts, sk 1, put 4 hdc in 1 st, sk 1, put 1 scs in each of the remaining sts.

Row 6. Change to purple. Ch 1, put 1 sc in each of the next 17 sts, put 1 hdc in the next st, 1 dc in the following st, 1 trc in the next, 1 dc in the next, 1 hdc in the one after, put 1 sc in each of the remaining sts.

Row 7. Change to white. Ch 1, put 1 sc in each of the sts.

Row 8-9. Change to purple. Ch 1, put 1 sc in each st.

Tie off and weave in your ends.

Fold the ribbon as shown in the pictures and run a yarn needle through the middle to secure it.

Make a loop to hang it as shown.

That’s it! Your crochet ribbon candy ornament is ready to hang up. I highly recommend using 100% cotton yarn if you can since it gives it a stiffness that acrylic doesn’t have. If you prefer synthetic materials… maybe nylon would work? Just make sure you use a hook at least 1 size smaller than the yarn recommends on the label. (How to Read a Yarn Label)
