How to snack without getting your hands dirty

I’m not usually a snacker when I crochet, but while I was pregnant, snacking was literally the only way I could eat food. I didn’t have much room for food, especially toward the end of my pregnancy. Plus, large amounts of food made me sick. So, I made a tiktok post, asking what foods were yarn appropriate. I was surprised by how many people responded with their favorite, go to snacks for crocheting. They also shared how to snack without getting hands dirty, if the snacks were less than clean. I tried a few, and it helped a lot, so I figured I’d make a post to share some of the most popular answers and tips.

1. Fruits and veggies

A good 50% of the comments I got on my video said fruit; like berries, grspes, or cut up apples. Or veggies; like cucumbers, carrots, or celery. I really liked the idea of having a fruit and veggie plate next to me while I work. Many people suggested toothpicks or chopsticks to keep your hands from being sticky.

Many suggested cheese cubes along with the fruit. Which was a great added protein. Making skewers of your favorites ahead of time might be a good way as well.

2. Popcorn

I was surprised how many people said popcorn! Some said they ate it with no butter or salt to keep their hands clean. However some people came up with a different way to eat the more flavorful popcorn. Like with chopsticks, or to frog eat it, which is when you put your tongue out, let the popcorn stick to it, and then pull it into your mouth. That last one I thought was ingenious and brought a whole new meaning to the term, frogging.

3.  Crackers

Cheese Its or Goldfish seemed to be the most popular of the crackers mentioned. However, I did see a couple people say they made home made “lunchables” and would snag one off a plate and put it in their mouth all at once. I assume they meant using something like a round butter cracker with cheese and/or cut up cold cuts, like a mini charcuterie plate. They would wash their hands with a damp cloth in between.

I myself, have eaten Goldfish while crocheting, but I felt the need to wash my hands thoroughly every time I took a handful. They’re just too greasy in my opinion and I found it annoying to stop and wash up. So, for Goldfish specifically I started using a cup and “drinking” my crackers. That was a suggestion from someone who used a cup for Cheetos.

4. Nuts

Almonds were said most often, with peanuts being a close second. But I loved the idea of pre-shelled pistachios that were suggested! I feel like nuts in general have become super popular, but pistachios are definitely a hot word the last couple of years. I think mixed nuts or a good trail mix with dried fruits in it would make a lovely crochet friendly snack!

As for the eating method, I think the best way would be to use the “drinking” from a cup idea.

5. Candy

There were quite a few mentions of candy, specifically; Jolly Ranchers, Twizlers, Milk Duds, or M and M’s, Skittles, hard candy in general. I have eaten gummy worms or bears whilst crocheting in the past. But I was really trying to eat healthier foods at the time because I was very pregnant… as in I had the baby the week after I posted that video.

For the gummies I used a chopstick to pick them up and pop them into my mouth. I felt like a baby bird more than once with the gummy worms, but it worked right?

Honorable mentions!

Pretzels were one snack I had heard before, and as long as you steered clear from the flavor covered ones, I think you would be good with a damp cloth.

Harvest snaps became my obsession once I remembered they existed. I used the “drinking” method and it turned out great!

Veggie straws are definitely a great choice as well, they’re not really messy and I think a napkin would be all you needed.

Ultimately, people said to eat whatever you wanted and have a damp cloth, sanitizer, or baby wipes nearby to make sure your project stays clean. For those crocheters who are making gifts, or selling their finished projects I would like to say you would need to be careful of allergies if you prefer any kind of nut to snack on.
