When I ran into the Dollar tree to buy some Christmas cards last year, I found, to my surprise, that the Dollar Tree has one pound yarn for $5! Full disclosure I haven’t been able to crochet much since I had my baby… But buying yarn for projects, or on sale, seems to be a hobby in and of itself. I’ve made a few posts on yarn at dollar tree, most of which is from Premier yarns. After looking up to see if anyone else said something about the giant skeins of yarn, I saw a few videos that mentioned Just Yarn Value as well. However the one I found today was actually from Red Heart, the Classic value. So, let’s find out if it’s worth the price, because let’s face it, we know most things at dollar tree are now, much more than a dollar.
Is it worth the price?
It’s $5 for this 16 oz skein that holds 865 yards ( 824 meters) of yarn.
That’s .005 cents and yard.. which is an amazing price for yarn.
I’m a huge fan of premier yarns so I knew that was a fantastic deal. As for Red Heart, who among us doesn’t have an experience with Red Heart Supers Savers? I have a review for it, right here in fact. But that’s where most of my experience with red heart comes from. I don’t dislike Super Savers, it’s a work horse that’s affordable and any seasoned fiber artist will tell you that it softens up when you wash the finished product. But I’ve never used classic before. The skein comes in a bag and I grabbed the last one which happens to be in an off white color.
So while it’s undoubtedly a great price let’s see how good of a deal this yarn is.
The use of this yarn

I made quite a few things with this yarn. Since it was an off white, I mostly use it for prototypes. My little one’s favorite ended up being this mushroom guy that I can’t wait to make again in more colors!
I have the pattern written up, and I want to make this a new pattern very soon!
Note: I have used the Just Yarn Value 1 pound yarn before, but I bought it on the Premier Yarns website. I have used it for a lot of different projects, and have never had an issue with it. So, I’m speaking about the Red Heart Value Yarn Specifically.
I really liked working with this yarn, it’s pretty soft in my hands and I think it would be good for shawls or scarfs especially. However, I don’t think I would use it for home decor. When you wash it, it becomes even softer and develops a lot of pills and “halo” (fuzziness around the main strand of yarn). Here is the prototype I mentioned of the mushroom doll earlier. This is what it looks like since being washed. I still think it’s a good value, but I would be picky with what I made out of it in the future.

Conclusion
It seems to come and go at the Dollar Tree, so make sure you keep a look out for it. Especially when we get close to the holidays, I think that’s when they tend to have these larger balls the most. The biggest con, in my opinion, is that they only have a few colors when the store does have them. Typically, red, white, green, black, and navy. In addition, they run out extremely quickly, and don’t seem to restock the yarn quickly. Finding multiple skeins with the same dye lot might be an issue, but I myself have never seen more than the one white skein.
I have written about the smaller skeins of Just Yarn, quite a bit and the limited colors in the Dollar Tree are always an issue. See my review here. But, at least the smaller ones usually have a seasonal pallet of about 6 to 8 colors to work with. But what do you think? Have you used this yarn before? Both of these are fantastic choices in my opinion. Especially, if you have handmade presents, decor or yarn stocking on your mind. I for one will be checking in to my local dollar tree more often to see if this yarniness continues.
