The Crochet Basics: The Extended Half Double Crochet Stitch

The Extended Half Double Crochet Stitch

I made tutorials for the Extended Double Crochet  and The Extended Single Crochet, so it’s only right that I make a post for the extended half double crochet stitch too.

You might say I’m obsessed at this point. With the half double crochet being a favorite of mine. I’m excited to do the extended version of it.

The size of the extended half double ends up being around the same as a normal double crochet. But it keeps the look of a half double.

Much like The Extended Single Crochet, there are two abbreviation for the extended half double crochet: exhdc and ehdc.

Supplies

  • Yarn
    • I’m using worsted Just Yarn in Grey
  • Hook
    • I’m using a G+/4.5mm hook
  • Snips
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations

  • St = stitch
  • Ch = chain
  • Yo = yarn over
  • Sc = single crochet
  • Exhdc = extended half double crochet
  • <> = the total number of stitches in the row

The starting knot and chains are both things you’ll definitely need to know how to do. But this tutorial doesn’t require you to know how to make the single crochet.

Weaving in the ends for The Extended Half Double Crochet Stitch

The Extended Half Double Crochet Stitch Tutorial

Cut your tail leaving a 4 inch end, weave in your tail.

Here’s a look at the finished swatch. It has a really interesting look to it, but I would say that where the extended double and single crochets had a really awesome drape and flowiness to it… the extended half double crochet needs a larger hook size to achieve that.

It is still a beautiful stitch with an elegant look, like the other two extended stitches. But, I think if you wanted some structure to your fabric you could do it with this stitch. The extended single and double crochets you definitely don’t have a lot of structure with.

This is the same swatch for the extended half double crochet. But the left one is the pattern above using one chain up. The right one, (without the ends woven in) was made with two chain ups at the start of each row.

What would you want to make with this stitch? I think I would use a size J/6mm hook and make an great unisex infinity scarf.
