Whilst making the Extended Double Crochet post, I found out about the extended single crochet stitch. After seeing how much I love the extended double crochet, I knew I had to give the single crochet version a go.
Sadly, the extended single crochet doesn’t seem to be very popular. I’ve not seen a whole lot of patterns with it, but maybe that will change when more people see how awesome it is!
In height it’s about the same size as a half double crochet. Actually, it also looks a lot like the half double too. While the fabric this stitch creates is flowy, it doesn’t create large holes, which I find awesome!
As for an abbreviation, I’ve seen it two ways. The one I saw just a touch more was esc, but, exsc was usually put in as a also used abbreviation. I’m using exsc because it makes more sense to me.
Supplies
- Yarn
- I used worsted weight Just Yarn in grey
- Hook
- *I used a G+/4.5mm hook
- Snips
- Yarn needle
*I used a hook two sizes smaller than recommended for my yarn. I just wanted to see how much drape the stitch created.
Abbreviations
- St = stitch
- Ch = chain
- Yo = yarn over
- Sc = single crochet
- Exsc = extended single crochet

The starting knot and chains are both things you’ll definitely need to know how to do. But this tutorial doesn’t require you to know how to make the single crochet.

Weaving in the ends for The Extended Single Crochet Stitch

Cut your tail leaving a 4 inch end, weave in your tail.

This is how the swatch will look. I can’t get over how intricate the stitch looks. Especially since it is so easy to make! It has a simple elegance about that makes me think I will definitely be using it a lot now that I know it exists.
What would you want to use this stitch for? I know I’m going to have to design something with it myself. It’s too beautiful not to. Tell me what you think I should make in the comments!
