You know I love how cute crochet candy is. Once I started, I couldn’t stop with the crochet candy corns, gummy worms just seemed like the next logical step! These are absolutely adorable and super easy to make. I have used cotton yarn for them in this pattern because they’re so soft and most of them have gone to my little one. I have also used chenille yarn for them (there’s a photo of that later), because it just makes sense. However, I have also used acrylic yarn for them and in my opinion they’re all cute.
If you know me, then you know I love Halloween! The candy is no exception, but if I’m honest I like the look of it more than actually eating it most of the time. Which is why I especially love making crocheted candies, because they’re so sweet looking, plus they work up fast! You can make a bowl or bag full in a few hours most of the time. Which makes them great for decor or goodie bags.
Supplies
- Yarn
- At least two colors of the same weight I’m using mid weight (4) I Love This Cotton in Orchid (color A) and Orange (color B)
- G/4.mm hook
- Snips or scissors
- Yarn needle
- Pipe cleaner / chenille stem (optional)
- A stitch marker
Abbreviations
- Sc = single crochet
- Ch = chain
- Mc = locking magic circle
- Slst = slip stitch
- St = stitch
- Inv Inc = invisible increase
- Dec = decrease
- *-* = repeat the instructions between the symbols
Crochet Gummy Worm Pattern
Round 1. Make 6 scs in a locking Mc, slst to join the round. <6>
Round 2. Ch 1, put 1 sc in each stitch, slst to join. <6>
No stuffing is needed for this gummy! But you can use a pipe cleaner if you aren’t giving it to children under 3!
Round 3-9. Ch 1, put 1 sc in each st, slst to join. <6>
Change color on the pull through of the slst to join. Cut color A’s woking yarn and tie to the tail of the new color B working yarn, make a knot to keep them in place.
10. Ch 1, make 1 sc in each st, slst to join.
11-15. Ch 1, make 1 sc in each st, slst to join.
16. Ch 1, make 1 sc in the same st, inc in next st, *1 sc, 1 inc,* repeat *-* once more, slst to join.
17. Ch 1, make 1 sc in the same st, dec in next st, *1 sc, 1 dec,* repeat *-* once more, slst to join.
Weaving in the ends
Tie off your tail to cinch the last 6 stitches closed. Sew the ends into the worm as shown.
If you’re making a bendable worm, then add your pipe cleaner before you cinch it closed.
And that’s it! You can make a bunch of these as decor, use them as “ingredients” for kids potions, make worry/ emotional support worms, fidget toy, or key chains.
I made another worm using chenille yarn, (Premier Yarns Just Chenille from Dollar Tree) and it came out super cute and fluffy. This was made using a G/4.mm hook as well.
