I admit it.. I’ve been holding out on you guys. If you’ve been here since October, you’ll probably remember when I made the 8th Day Of Halloween: Crochet Skull Motif? Well, I actually came up with two skull motif crochet pattern… One was more realistic and bit larger, while the other, was adorable and about half the size. Since I wanted something coaster sized for the Day’s of Halloween patterns, I went with the larger one. So this cutie ended up in my drawer.
However, this little skelly was just too cute not to share. What’s the difference between a skelly and a skull you might ask? A skelly is just too darn cute for it’s own good. You know it has mischief on it’s mind.. or head.. But you let it slide because how can you resist that face?
This little guy works up super quickly, so you can make an army of them in no time. What I especially love about this pattern, is it’s in rows with no special stitches! This pattern uses the 5 basic crochet stitches, so if you know those, you’re good to go. If you’re not familiar with them, no worries! Just be patient with yourself while creating this pattern, and take a look at the tutorials I have linked below.
Supplies
- Worsted weight yarn
- I used Just Yarn Worsted in grey
- A G+/4.5mm crochet hook
- Snips
- A yarn or tapestry needle

- Ch = Chain
- Dc = Double crochet
- Sc = Single crochet
- Hdc = Half Double Crochet
- Trc = Treble Crochet
- Chsp = chain space
- Slst = slip stitch
Little Skelly Crochet Motif Pattern
Foundation row. Ch 6.
Row 1. In the 3rd Ch from the hook, make 1 dc in the back bone of the st, put 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts. <4 dc>
Make sure you work your stitches into the back bone. It gives a cleaner bottom edge.
Row 2. Ch 1, turn, put 2 scs in the first st, put 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, put 2 scs in the last st. <6>
You do not count the initial ch 3 from row 1 as a stitch.
Row 3. Ch 1, turn, work 2 scs in the first st, put one sc in the next st, ch 3, sk 2 sts, sc in the 3rd, make 2 scs in the last st. <6 sc, 3chs>
The chain space you made here will be what you work into next row.
Row 4. Ch 1, turn, put 1 sc in the same st, ch 7, make 2 dcs in the ch sp, ch 7, put 1 sc in the very last st of the row. <14 chs, 2 sc, 2 dc>
One row left!!
Row 5. Ch, turn, put 4 scs in the ch 7 sp, make a hdc in the same sp, next make 4 dcs, working into the dcs from the previous row, put 1 trc in each of the dcs. <4sc, 1 hdc, 4 dcs, 2 trcs>
Row 5. (Continued) Working into the next ch 7 sp, make 4 dcs, put 1 hdc in the same sp, work 4 scs in the same ch sp, slst to the sc you made in row 4.
Tie off.
Weave in the ends.
That’s it; you’re done. Now your little skelly/skull motif crochet pattern is ready to be used in whatever way you wish!
As for uses, I think this little guy would look awesome on hats, blankets, cardigans, jackets, and even book covers. So make lots of them and spook up everything you can.
