9th Day Of Halloween: Crochet Ghost Light Pattern

Welcome to day 9 of our spooky crochet journey, today we’ll be making a crochet ghost light. What is a crochet ghost light you may ask? It’s a wee crochet ghost that you put over a LED tealight, not a real one because fire bad. It will give an eerie glow to any area in your home that you think might be in need of one.

Boo, I say! Let’s get started.

Supplies

  • White or off white yarn worsted weight
    • I used Premier Just Yarn worsted in Mushroom
  • G/4.mm hook
  • Snips
  • Yarn or tapestry
  • Black Felt

Abbreviations

  • Sc = Single crochet
  • St = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • <> = total number of stitches in round

Crochet Ghost Light pattern

Start by using a locking magic circle. Here’s a tutorial for how to make it: How To: Make A Magic Circle Crochet Tutorial (Or An Alternative).
I’m using a very light beige so you can see better, but use what you like!

Round 1. In a locking Mc, make 5 scs, slst to the first st to join. <5>

Round 2. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, put 1 more sc in the same st, put 2 scs in each of the next 4 sts, when you reach for stitch marker slst to that very first st to join the round. <10>

Round 3. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, put 2 scs in the next st, *put 1 sc in the next st, make 2 scs in the following st,* repeat this 3 times, when you come to your stitch marker slst to that very first st to join the round. <15>

Round 4. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, put one sc in each st, slst to the first st join. <15>

Round 5. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, make 1 sc in the following st, put 2 scs in the next st, *put 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, make 2 scs in the following st,* repeat this 4 times, when you come to your stitch marker slst to that very first st to join the round. <20>

Round 6-7. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, put one sc in each st, slst to the first st join. <20>

Round 8. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, make 1 sc in each of the following 2 sts, put 2 scs in the next st, *put 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, make 2 scs in the following st,* repeat this 4 times, when you come to your stitch marker slst to that very first st to join the round. <25>

Round 9-10. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, put one sc in each st, slst to the first st join. <25>

Round 11. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, make 1 sc in each of the following 3 sts, put 2 scs in the next st, *put 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, make 2 scs in the following st,* repeat this 4 times, when you come to your stitch marker slst to that very first st to join the round. <30>

Round 12. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, make 1 sc in each of the following 4 sts, put 2 scs in the next st, *put 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, make 2 scs in the following st,* repeat this 4 times, when you come to your stitch marker slst to that very first st to join the round. <35>

Why do ghosts love elevators? It lifts their spirit! Okay, I’ll stop now.

Round 13. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, put one sc in each st, slst to the first st join. <35>

Round 14. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, make 1 sc in each of the following 4 sts, put 2 scs in the next st, *put 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, make an invisible decrease in the next 2 scs in the following st,* repeat this 4 times, when you come to your stitch marker slst to that very first st to join the round. <30>

Round 15. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, put one sc in each st, slst to the first st join. <30>

Round 16. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st and mark it with a stitch marker, put 1 more sc in the same st, put 2 scs in each of the remaining sts, when you reach for stitch marker slst to that very first st to join the round. <60>

Cut a 4 inch tail, tie off your tail, and weave in your ends to secure them.

What do do with Your ghost

And that’s it! You can use some black felt to cut out a little mouth and some eyes. Or you can leave it to be a faceless non corporal being. Just place it over a LED candle to make it have an unearthly glow.

Here’s a cool tip: If you color the bulb with a permanent marker then you can turn the light different colors. Like ectoplasm green or my favorite, purple.
