Some of my fondest childhood memories are of running around with a freeze pop in the summer while playing outside. Obviously I’m older now, but I still remember holding it in my hand with a paper towel wrapped around the base so my hand didn’t freeze off or get all sticky… I think that’s why they usually came out at the height of water fight season.
As a 90’s kid I also remember the first episode of Star Wars coming out and thinking that anything and everything was a light saber. So, when thinking about this months pattern I couldn’t help but have a flash back and make this pattern for my 6 year old self…. who am I kidding I finished that pattern, put a freeze pop in it, and started playing with my lightsaber right off the hook! (My color is definitely purple, how about yours?)
For anyone who just wants a freeze pop holder, stick to the end and see the alternative.
But seriously who doesn’t love freeze pops and Star Wars?
supplies
- Grey and black yarn
- Any color you like
- (optional)A small amount of red and blue yarn
- (optional) red and blue felt
- Hook sizes H/5mm and 1.5mm
- Snips
- Yarn or tapestry needle
Abbreviations
- Ch = chain
- Sc = single crochet
- Mc = Magic Circle
- Blo = back loop only
- Flo = front loop only
- Hdc = Half Double Crochet
- BP = back post
- <> = total number of stitches in round
Lightsaber freeze pop holder pattern
Round 1. In a Mc put 6 scs, slst to the first sc to join.
Use grey yarn to start.
Round 2. Ch 1, put 2 sc in the same st, put 2 scs in each st, slst to the first sc to join. <12>
Round 3. Ch 1, put 1 sc in that same st, *put 2 scs in the next st, put 1 sc in the next st,* repeat from *-* until you reach the first stitch, slst to the first sc to join. <18>
Make sure that the right side < is facing the bottom and that the wrong side> is facing the top.
Round 4. Ch 1, put a sc in the back loop of the same st, put 1 sc in each st Blo, slst to the first sc to join. <18>
This is how you change colors, make sure you tie the ends together in a simple knot and after you crochet 4 or 5 scs go back and do a second knot.
Round 5. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st, put 1 sc in each st, change color to black for the slst to the first sc to join. <18>
I used a different color for the back post scs so you can see what it looks like more easily.
Round 6. Using black yarn, ch 1, put a hdc in the same st, put 1 hdc in each st, slst to the first sc to join. <18>
The origins of crocheting unknown, some claim that it originated in Arabia, then followed along Arab trade routes.. Others believe that it started in South America.
Round 7. Ch 1, make a Bp sc around the first hdc from the previous row, make BP scs around every hdc until you come to your first sc, change color to grey for the slst to the first sc to join. <18>
Round 8 -13. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st, put 1 sc in each st until you reach your first st, change color to black for the slst to the first sc to join. <18>
Round 14. Using black yarn, ch 1, put a hdc in the same st, put 1 hdc in each st, slst to the first sc to join. <18>
Round 15. Ch 1, make a Bp sc around the first hdc from the previous row, make BP scs around every hdc until you come to your first sc, change color to grey slst to the first sc to join. <18>
Round 16-17. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st, put 1 sc in each st until you reach your first st, change color to black for the slst to the first sc to join. <18>
Round 18. Using black yarn, put a sc in the front loop only, put 1 Flo sc in each stitch until you reach your first st, slst to the first sc to join. <18>
Cut and tie off your tail, then weave it in.
Rectangle
Foundation row. Using black Ch 5.
Row 1. In the 2nd ch from the hook, make 1 sc in the backbone of the st, put 1 sc in each backbone st. <4>
Row 2. Ch 1, turn, put 1 sc in each st. <4>
Cut tail and tie off, weave in your ends.
The buttons
You have a couple options for this one.
- You can make them out of felt, 1 in red and 1 in blue.
- Alternatively you can use actual buttons, 1 in red and 1 in blue.
- You can crochet the buttons using red and blue yarn with the pattern below.
In a Mc using a 1.5mm hook, put 6 scs in your Mc, slst to the first sc to join. <6>
Cut tail, tie off, and weave in your end. Because I showed a locking Mc you can just trim the end of the middle. If you used another method, make sure you lock in your tail before trimming it.
Assembly and Extras
Sew or glue the buttons to your rectangle. Put the blue on top and the red on the bottom.
Sew or glue the rectangle to the middle part of the saber base.
That’s it! You’re lightsaber is done!
If you want to make a sith version just invert the black and grey colors in the pattern and make the rectangle grey instead of black.
Alternatively, if you’re not into Star Wars, (shame on you! Jk) then you can make the base any color you want. I made it in a variegated yarn with no color changes and left out the rectangle and buttons for a more elegant look.
I love how quick these are to make. I can make one start to finish in a little under an hour, so you can easily work up a bunch of these in no time.
