Amigurumi Bao Bun Crochet Pattern

Supplies

White 100% cotton worsted weight yarn* (I’m using Peaches & Creme)
- You can use any worsted weight you like. You can also use a larger weight yarn if you want a bigger bao bun.
F/3.75 mm hook
- If you change yarn weight be sure to use 1 size smaller than the recommend hook size on your yarn label
Snips
Yarn or tapestry needle
12mm safety eyes (optional)
stuffing
stitch marker (highly recommend)

Abbreviations

Sc = Single crochet
Mc = Magic circle

Amigurumi Bao Bun Pattern

Begin with a Mc or a locking Mc. Here’s a tutorial for that How To: Make A Magic Circle Crochet Tutorial (Or An Alternative).

Round 1. In a Mc, make 6 scs. <6>

Round 2. Put a sc in the first st of the previous rnd, place a stitch marker in that first st, put 1 sc in the same st, put 2 scs in each st. <12>

Round 3. Put a sc in the first st of the previous rnd, place a stitch marker in that first st, put 2 scs in the next st, *put 1 sc in the next st, put 2 scs in the next st* repeat *-* until you come to your stitch marker. <18>

Round 4. Put a sc in the first st of the previous rnd, place a stitch marker in that first st, put 1 sc in the next st, put 2 scs in the next st, *put 1 sc in each of the next 2 st, put 2 scs in the next st* repeat *-* until you come to your stitch marker. <24>

Round 5. Put a sc in the first st of the previous rnd, place a stitch marker in that first st, put 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, put 2 scs in the next st, *put 1 sc in each of the next 3 st, put 2 scs in the next st* repeat *-* until you come to your stitch marker. <30>

If you didn’t know The word Bao is rhymes with wow.

Round 6. Put a sc in the first st of the previous rnd, place a stitch marker in that first st, put 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, put 2 scs in the next st, *put 1 sc in each of the next 4 st, put 2 scs in the next st* repeat *-* until you come to your stitch marker. <36>

Round 7. Put a sc in the first st of the previous rnd, place a stitch marker in that first st, put 1 sc in each st in the round until you come to your stitch marker. <36>

Round 8. Put a sc in the first st of the previous rnd, place a stitch marker in that first st, put 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, put 2 scs in the next st, *put 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, put 2 scs in the next st* repeat *-* until you come to your stitch marker. <42>

Round 9. Put a sc in the first st of the previous rnd, place a stitch marker in that first st, put 1 sc in each st in the round until you come to your stitch marker. <42>

There is a Hawaiian food called Manapua, which is a version of the bao bun.

Round 10. Put a sc in the first st of the previous rnd, place a stitch marker in that first st, put 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, make a 2 together/invisible decrease in the next st, *put 1 sc in the next 5 sts, make a 2 together/invisible decrease in the next st,* repeat from *-* until you come to your stitch marker. <36>

Round 11. Put a sc in the first st of the previous rnd, place a stitch marker in that first st, put 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, make a 2 together/invisible decrease in the next st, *put 1 sc in the next 4 sts, make a 2 together/invisible decrease in the next st,* repeat from *-* until you come to your st marker. <30>

Round 12. Put a sc in the first st of the previous rnd, place a stitch marker in that first st, put 1 sc in each st in the round until you come to your stitch marker. <30>

Round 13. Put a sc in the first st of the previous rnd, place a stitch marker in that first st, put 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, make a 2 together/invisible decrease in the next st, *put 1 sc in the next 3 sts, make a 2 together/invisible decrease in the next st,* repeat from *-* until you come to your stitch marker. <24>

weaving in the ends

Take the amigurumi bao bun body and puff it out. Now you add the eyes.

I’m using safety eyes but you can also embroider them.* I put them in between the 7th and 8th rounds (from the bottom) with about 7 stitches between them. I like the cute durp kind of look so I make mine wider, but you can put them wherever you think they look best.

*If you’re planning on giving this to child under the age of 3 then be sure to embroider the eyes them.

Use a bit of yarn or embroidery floss to make a mouth. I used floss in black, but use what you like. Follow the picture instructions to make the mouth.

stuffing

Now that you’re done making it’s face you can stuff is with extra bits of yarn and pillow stuffing.

Pleating

Snip your yarn leaving a 10 inch tail, tie off your tail. Thread the tail through the yarn needle and work it down one row. Weave the yarn though the to create a pleated top. I decided to make the ark 4 stitches wide and the dip inward 3 stitches wide. Repeat this in and out pattern until you return to the start of your tail. Cinch it closed and you should have a star like pattern on the top of your bao bun.

Now is the time to make sure that the bun is stuffed to your liking, if you think it’s not fluffy enough shove a bit more stuffing through the top. Work your needle back through the pleat a couple more times to make sure that it’s secure.

Then push the needle through the body and at different points pull the yarn through and then push is back through the same place to have the needle come out somewhere else. This is so the tail gets tangled in the stuffing and it doesn’t come loose.

And that’s it. You have your little bao bun and it’s ready to be loved! This pattern works up so fast that you can easily make a steamer basket full of these little cuties.
