Art Block Beater: 5 Day Challenge

I don’t know if the type of art block I experience is typical, but this is a good way to beat all types.

Sometimes my brain goes into overload. I have so many ideas and so many mediums that I just can’t choose…and I end up doing nothing at all.

So I’ve decided I’m not going to let it stop me. If I go more than 3 days without drawing I’m going to issue myself a challenge!

I decided a 5 day challenge would be the best way to start off.

If you want to make yourself an art challenge, but don’t know where to start, here’s what I did.

  • Plan the challenge around the amount of time you have.

Be realistic. I’m busy on weekends, so I made it 5 days Monday – Friday.

Bare in mind it’s also a challenge, so make time. It is just as important as your other responsibilities.

  • Pick a theme.

A theme can be a particular subject (animals, people, buildings, objects, plants, creatures) or something as simple as a word. You can do a different word every day, the same word to see what you can do with it, or a combination like I did.

  • Plan your restrictions.

Why restrictions? Well you don’t have to have any, but it can add to the challenge. Examples: Use only a certain medium, do a sketch everyday(this can help form a habit), do a full color finished piece, make it timed.

  • Start!

This is the most important part, even if you don’t follow anything else, start your challenge. You can do it!

  • Have fun!

This is just as important, some days it might feel like a chore, but push through! You’ll be happier for it at the end. If you get behind it’s your choice to catch up or continue on. Just don’t stop, this is for you!
