This little egg crochet pattern is not only adorable, but it may be pretty useful too. I can’t tell you where I first heard of meditation eggs from, because honestly I don’t remember. I tried to find an article on them, but I just keep finding sellers of small eggs of some sort instead of how to use a meditation egg. I’ll get into how I came up with an egg for this months newsletter pattern in a minute. And no, it’s not because Easter is so close.. or at least not just because of that.
Why an egg?
I’ve done some research on spring holidays and whether you’re talking about the Hindu holiday Holi, the Jewish holiday Purim, the Christian holiday Easter, or the Wiccan holiday Ostara. They all celebrate the arrival of spring as new life, new beginnings, and love.
Ostara and Easter have a lot in common in particular. And one of the main things that were similar was eggs. I know it sounds crazy, I’m talking about love and new beginnings, and then devolve to eggs? Well, bare with me a little longer.
Eggs are a symbol of fertility, rebirth, new beginnings and the life cycle.
Spring cleaning, planting seeds, and making new plans are all things that most of us at least think about this time of year, if not take part of.
I can open the widows, clean out the cob webs, and start planting flowers this time of year
While I was doing this, I kept thinking about what this months pattern was going to be. I decided after a lot of thought that I would make a meditation egg. Usually, they are made of stone, metal, or wood, but I wanted to make one from yarn.
Supplies
- Mid weight (4) yarn
- I used Crafter’s Secret in cranberry
- A F/3.75m crochet hook
- Yarn or tapestry needle
- Snips
Abbreviations
- Mc = magic circle How To: Make A Magic Circle Crochet Tutorial (Or An Alternative)
- st = stitch
- ch = chain The Crochet Basics: How To Make The Chain Stitch And The Slip Stitch
- inv dec = invisible decrease How To Make An Invisible Crochet Decrease And Increase
- sc = single crochet The Crochet Basics: How To Make A Single Crochet Stitch
- slst = slip stitch
- <> = total number of stitches in round
Meditation Egg Crochet Pattern
I’m using the locking magic circle for this pattern, I have a tutorial for it in the abbreviations area.
Round 1. Make 7 scs in a locking Mc, slst to the first st to join. <7>
Round 2. Ch 1, make 2 scs in each st, slst to the first to join. <14>
Rounds 3-5. Ch 1, make 1 sc in each st, slst to join. <14>
Round 6. Ch 1, make 1 sc in the first st, make 1 sc in the next st, put an inv dec in the next sts, *make 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, put 1 inv dec in the next sts,* repeat from *-* until you come to the last st.<11>
Round 7. Ch 1, make 1 sc in the first st, put an inv dec in the next sts, * 1 sc in the next st, 1 inv dec in the sts after,* repeat from *-* until you come to the last 2 sts of the round, put 1 sc in each of the last 2 sts, slst to join. <8>
Round 8. Ch 1, make an inv dec in each st, slst to join. <4>
Weaving in the ends
Tie off your end and use it to cinch the last 4 sts closed. Then weave in your end and secure it.
