I decided last year that all of this years newsletter pattern would follow the theme of: Things that you would find in a witches cottage. After much though for what the very first pattern of the year would be, I decided to make a beautiful little Crochet Collection Pouch Pattern. And if the title didn’t give it away, I just love how this came out!
I primarily used the moss stitch for this bag and I must say that the drape of the fabric is wonderful. The moss stitch goes by many names including the linen stitch and the granite stitch. what ever you call it I think it works beautifully. The inspiration for this pouch was the linen or fabric pouches that you often see on people’s hips in medieval art and reenactments. I thought this would be great for collecting things like rocks, herbs, or just housing your collections of things. I might have some thing special in mind to fill it next month.. But I guess you’ll have to wait and see. Let’s get to the pattern!
Supplies
- I Love This Yarn Stonewash Denim
- Or any (4) medium weight yarn
- Hook: H/5.mm
- Snips
- Yarn Needle
- Black Ribbon
- You can use any color ribbon you want
- 2 beads (optional)
Abbreviation
- sc = single crochet
- slst = slip stitch
- st = stitch
- ch = chain
- hdc = Half Double Crochet
- sk = skip
- Mc = Magic circle
- * * = repeat the instructions between the stars/asterisk
- < > = the total number of stitches in the round
The Crochet Collection Pouch Pattern
I used the locking magic circle for this pattern, if you need a reminder, or an alternative, check out my tutorial: How To: Make A Magic Circle Crochet Tutorial (Or An Alternative).
Round 1. 10 scs in a locking Mc, slst to join. <10>
Round 2. Ch 1, 2 scs in each, slst to join. <20>
Round 3. Ch 1, *make a sc, put 2 scs in the next, * repeat until you reach your first st, slst to join. <30>
Round 4. Ch 1, *make a sc, put 2 scs in the next, * repeat until you reach the last 2 sts, put 1 sc in each of the last 2 sts, slst to join. <44>
Round 5. Ch 1, make a sc into the first st, *ch 1, skip 1, make 1 sc,* repeat until you come to the last st, ch 1, and slst to the first sc. <44>.
Round 6. Ch 2, sk 1, make a sc in the next, *ch 1, sk 1, make 1 sc,* repeat until you reach your last st, make a sc in the last st, slst around the initial ch 2. <44>
Make sure that you’re working the single crochets into the chain spaces!
Round 7-9. Repeat rounds 5 and 6.
Round 10. Ch 1, put 1 sc in same, put 1 sc in the next, 2 scs in next, * 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 scs in the next,* repeat until you reach the last 5 sts, make 1 sc in each of the last 5 sts, slst to join <54>
Rounds 11-22. Repeat 5-6. <54>
Round 5. Ch 1, make a sc into the first st, *ch 1, skip 1, make 1 sc,* repeat until you come to the last st, ch 1, and slst to the first sc.
Round 6. Ch 2, sk 1, make a sc in the next, *ch 1, sk 1, make 1 sc,* repeat until you reach your last st, make a sc in the last st, slst around the initial ch 2.
Round 23. Ch 1, make a hdc into the first st, *ch 1, skip 1, make 1 hdc,* repeat until you come to the last st, ch 1, and slst to the first hdc. <54>.
Rounds 24 – 26. Repeat rounds 5-6. <54>
Round 5. Ch 1, make a sc into the first st, *ch 1, skip 1, make 1 sc,* repeat until you come to the last st, ch 1, and slst to the first sc.
Round 6. Ch 2, sk 1, make a sc in the next, *ch 1, sk 1, make 1 sc,* repeat until you reach your last st, make a sc in the last st, slst around the initial ch 2.
Weaving in the ends

This is how I secure the end before I cut it.
Adding The Ribbon
You can use a different colored yarn, a piece of cord, or a ribbon like I did.
I thread the ribbon through the half double crochets I made in round 23. For this ribbon, I used an in and out weaving technique.
I threaded a grey pearl on each end of the ribbon, tied a knot on each end and snipped off the excess.
This would be a great quick addition to a costume, to use in cosplay, or for anyone who likes having pouches to collect things. I think this came out very nicely. In fact I made quite a few of them as you can see here!
I’ll give you a bit more of a hint, I have next months pattern inside the red pouch.. Any guesses?
