It’s October so I had to make something extra spooky this month… And something that I can hide to spook my brothers with. When I read Long Live the Pumpkin Queen (Here’s my Long Live The Pumpkin Queen Audiobook Review), they mentioned lots of spiders. Well, my brain just wouldn’t accept anything else as this month’s newsletter pattern. So, with out much more ado The spooky crochet spider pattern!
Supplies
- Worsted weight yarn
- F/3.75 crochet hook
- Snips
- Yarn or Tapestry Needle
- Safety eyes or black beads (optional)
Abbreviations
- Ch = Chain
- st = Stitch
- Mc = Magic Circle
- sc = Single crochet
- slst = slip stitch
- inv dec = invisible decrease
- blo = back loop only
- flo = front loop only
- yo = yarn over
- Triple crochet = yo twice, work into st, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through 2 loops.
Spooky Crochet Spider Pattern
Round 1. 6 scs in the locking Mc, slst to join. <6>
Round 2. Ch 1, put 2 scs in each st, slst to join. <12>
Round 3. Ch 1, put 1 sc in the same st, make 2 scs in the st after, *put 1 sc in the next st, make 2 scs in the st after, * repeat from *-* until you come to the end of the round, slst to join. <18>
Rounds 4-6. Ch 1, put 1 sc in each st, slst to join. <18>
Round 7. Ch 1, put 1 sc in the same st, make an inv dec, *put 1 sc in the next st, make an inv dec in the sts after, * repeat from *-* until you come to the end of the round, slst to join. <12>
Stuff your body here.
Round 8. Ch 1, make an inv dec in the first and second sts, make inv decs in every st, slst to join. <6>
Spooky spider head
Round 9. Ch 1, make 2 scs in the blo of every st, slst to join. <12>
Remember the front loops you left in this round you’ll need them later.
Round 10. Ch 1, put a sc in the same st, make 1 sc in each if the next 6 sts, slst into one of the posts in the 8th round,
Round 10. (continued) Continue putting 1 sc in each remaining st, slst to join. <12>
Round 11. Ch 1, put 1 sc in each st, slst to join. <12>
Note: skip the slst you made in round 10.
Round 12. Ch 1, make an inv dec in the first 2 sts of the round, *yo twice, make an inv dec in the next 2 sts and finish the triple crochet,
Round 12. (continued) Slst to one of the back loops left by the inv dec,* make 3 more inv decs, then repeat from *-* in the last two sts, slst to join. <6 scs, 2 slsts>
Add safety eyes if desired, and then stuff the head before you join the round.
Weaving in the head and body piece
Snip the yarn leaving a 4 inch tail, tie off your end.
Take your yarn needle, and weave the tail around all of the front loops of the 8 sts you’re left with.
Pull tightly to cinch the head closed. Secure the tail and snip off the excess.
Leg make 2
Main chain: Ch 22.
Slst into the 2nd ch from the hook, slst down 9 more sts. That is one leg.
When I mention the Main Chain in the future I mean this initial 22 chs.
Ch 9, Slst into the 2nd ch from the hook, slst down 7 more sts. Slst back into the 11th st of the Main Chain.
Ch 9, Slst into the 2nd ch from the hook, slst down 7 more sts.
Slst back into the main ch and put 1 slst in each of the remaining sts.
Cut your yarn leaving a 2 inch tail, pull both of the tails through that last loop.
Pull firmly on both tails, then make a simple knot to secure it. snip the excess yarn.
Attaching the legs to The spooky crochet spider pattern
You have two choices on how to attach your legs, either do it how I did using the instructions below. Or you can just sew them in place with yarn and needle. I like the ridge this makes on the back, but it’s up to you.
Attach your yarn to the front loops left over from round 9. You will only be working into those front loops.
Ch 1 to lock the st in place, slst into the next loop, next put the middle st of the legs on to your hook.
Go into the next loop and slst through the legs and the loop on your hook. Work over the legs, making sure you have two front legs and two back legs on either side, and slst back into the same loop.
Slst into the next loop, then ch 1. You should be at that slst you made in row 10.
Work into the loop on the other side of the protruding slst. Slst into the next loop, then put the middle st of the other set of legs on to the hook, work into the slst through the legs, the loop, and the loop on your hook.
Work over the legs, making sure you have two front legs and two back legs on either side, and slst back into the same loop.
Put 1 slst into each of the last 2 loop, slst to the first slst you made to join the round.
Snip your tail, leaving about 4-6 inches to weave in. Tie off.
Weave in the starting tail so it’s out of the way. Then secure your long tail.

That’s it for the little spider! I love how it came out and its so quick that you can make a bunch of them if you wish.
A few more webs.. I mean, words
I made my first few in some off white scrap yarn and they look like little spider ghosts. Aren’t they cute? I put safety eyes one one of them, but it was very difficult because its such a small space. Sewing on black beads after I was done crocheting the grey one is what I chose to do, and I liked that a lot better. I used yarn to sew the beads on so it would blend in better but do what you think looks good!
Note: If you are making this spider with a child in mind or you know a child might get a hold of it, do not use beads or safety eyes. Embroider the eyes instead so that there are no choking hazards.
