Fair Isle and Fortunes is the sixth book in the Vampire knitting club series. These cozy mysteries can be stand alone, however, I feel like you understand the characters and their relationships so much better if you read/listen to them as a series. If you want to start with the first book in the series, here’s my review of The Vampire Knitting Club. This cozy mystery has it all, magic, murder, wrongful accusations, and a cold case. I’m a fan of the series as a whole, but let’s find out more in this Fair Isle and Fortunes Audiobook Review shall we?

This would be considered a paranormal cozy mystery.

The Vampire Knitting Club series as a whole would be considered paranormal cozy mystery.

“cozies”, If you aren’t familiar with the term, it is a sub-genre of crime novels that usually feature an amateur sleuth, placed in a small town or close knit community pardon the pun, and all of the violence or intimate situations happen off page. They generally focus on puzzle solving more than suspense.

This book is on the short side, the audio book is 5 hours long. So it’s probably considered a novella.

Fair Isle and Fortunes Summary

The annual summer fête in Moreton-under-Wychwood’s is one of the biggest social events of the year to the small Cotswolds village. Violet, Lucy’s witchy cousin, is the fortune teller this year. Lucy is happy to help out by being Violet’s assistant… as long as she can find someone to help with the her knitting shop, Cardinal Woolsey’s.
After securing a new part time shop assistant, Lucy finds herself at the fair the following Saturday. After looking around a bit, she’s ready to help Madame Violetta with her fortune telling tent.

Soon after, Violet tells a woman that she’ll die if she crosses water. The woman is upset of course, but the whole fair comes to a screeching halt when the same woman is found dead with an arrow in her chest.

Violet is suspected of causing the woman’s death by using a curse. Lucy’s great Aunt Lavinia, and Margaret Twigg, the head of their coven are having issues as well with the citizens of Moreton-under-Wychwood. Lucy and her Vampire Knitting Club have to take up sleuthing once again.. Before there’s a witch trial in this century.

Reader

Sarah Zimmerman is the vocalist for this audio book and the rest of the books in the series. It took me a couple of chapters to get used to her ironic/sarcastic tone in the first book, but I love her now.

The main character is quite sarcastic, so she chose that tone for the first person narration. Her various voices and accents make it clear that she is a wonderful voice actress.

Each character has a different voice and speech pattern that is quite enjoyable. You can easily tell the difference between them as well which is always something I look for in an audio book.

my Fair Isle and Fortunes Audiobook Review

There are lots of twists to the mystery in this book. Lucy may be an amateur sleuth, but you can tell she’s learned from her previous case cracking escapades.
I feel like this book really brings Violet and Lucy closer. This is probably the first time I’ve seen Lucy show a lot of concern for her Great Aunt Lavinia as well.
As far as character development, I think Lucy finally starts to see that she needs to practice her craft.. and I’m not talking about the knitting. Although, she could definitely use some more practice in that too. I hope to see Lucy willingly do more magic in the future.
