What do you get when you cross a shell stitch with a Crochet V stitch? The answer is no joke. You get a beautiful, elegant looking stitch. If you’ve never heard of the the V shell stitch for crochet then I’d say it’s about time you get acquainted.
What’s the stitch
The V shell stitch is made up of chains and double crochets. This combination stitch is a reversible, 1 row repeat that has a advantages of both the shell and the V stitch.
It has an open work feel, but it definitely has more substance to it than The Diamond Mesh Stitch, or it’s parent the V stitch. It gives off a half lace appearance. A great feature of this stitch is that it’s not really a yarn eater either. Unlike it’s shell stitch variation.
Uses
This would be a great stitch to use for fall or spring time wearable. It’s not super heavy, but it has enough substance to handle cooler weather.
It’s easy to make so baby blankets would probably work up quickly. As would wraps, scarves, cardigans, and even market bags.
Supplies
- Worsted weight yarn (4) in any color
- I used Peaches N Creme cotton in leaf green
- a H/5.mm hook
- Snips
- Yarn needle
Abbreviations
- st = stitch
- Ch = chain
- dc = Double crochet
- sk = skip
The V Shell Stitch Tutorial
The V shell stitch uses a multiple of 3 plus 3. So, 6,12,15,18,21,24 etc. Plus 3. 21 + 3 = 24
Foundation row. Ch 24.
Row 1. In the 4th ch from the hook, make 2 dcs, *sk 2 sts, make 2 dcs in that st, ch 1, make 2 more dcs in the same st*, this repeat is 1 V shell stitch completed,
Row 1. (Continued *sk 2 sts, make 2 dcs in that st, ch 1, make 2 more dcs in the same st*, this repeat is 1 V shell stitch completed, repeat from *-* until you reach the last 3 sts of your row, put 3 dcs in that last st so that it mirrors the other side. <6 V shells, 2 dc clusters>
Row 2. Ch 4, turn, make 2 dcs in the same st, *sk to the ch space you made in previous rows, make 2 dcs in that st, ch 1, make 2 more dcs in the same st*, repeat from *-* until you reach the last 3 sts of your row, put 3 dcs in that last st so that it mirrors the other side. <6 V shells)
Rows 3-8. Repeat row 2.
Weaving in the ends V Shell Stitch crochet
Tie off and weave in your ends.
