Welcome to day 7, today we’ll be making an upcycled crochet pumpkin ornament! These look amazing around the house, but I will admit they aren’t very spooky. I like to have a few things out for the harvest part of the season and you can definitely have these up til Thanksgiving without looking twice at them.
I try to reuse as much as I can. In fact, I remember when they use to tell you that you couldn’t leave the cap or ring on when you recycled the bottles. I think most recyclable plants take the whole bottle now. However, old habits die hard… I have a whole bunch of rings from water bottles and I decided to give them a new life as this crochet pumpkin ornament.
Let’s get to the pattern!
Supplies
- Plastic Bottle Rings
- H/5mm hook
- Orange yarn worsted weight (4) (cotton)
- I’m using Crafter’s Secret %100 cotton in Papaya
- Brown or green yarn
- I used brown yarn, Premier Just Cotton in earth
- Snips
- Yarn or tapestry needle
Abbreviations
- Ch = chain
- Sc = single crochet
- Hdc = Half Double Crochet
- Dc = Double crochet
- Trc = Treble crochet
- Slst = slip stitch
- St = stitch

Round 1. Ch 1 around a small plastic bottle ring, make 24 scs around this ring make sure to work over your tail, then slst to the first st to join. <24>
If you’re using a larger ring you might not have the same result. I’m using the small rings from cheap water bottles. (Like the 24- 40 packs from Aldi or Walmart)
Round 2. Ch 1, make a sc in the same st, mark it with a st marker, make a Hdc in the next st, 2 Hdcs in the next, 2 dcs in each of the next 2 sts,
Round 2 part 2. 2 Trcs in the next st, 2 dcs in each of the next 2 sts, 2 Hdcs in the next st, 1 Hdc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st, 1 slst in the next. At this point you should be about half way around the hoop.
Round 2 part 3. Make a sc in the same st, mark it with a st marker, make a Hdc in the next st, 2 Hdcs in the next, 2 dcs in each of the next 2 sts, 2 Trcs in the next st, 2 dcs in each of the next 2 sts,
Round 2 part 4. 2 Hdcs in the next st, 1 Hdc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st, 1 slst in the last st, slst to the sc with the stitch marker.
Cut a 4 inch tail, tie it off, and weave in the end.
Stem
Attach the brown or green yarn with a ch in the top sc you made a second ago, make a sc in the same st, 1 sc in the slst, 1 sc in the fist sc you made in round 2.
Ch 1, turn, make 1 sc in each of the 3 sts.
Ch 1, turn, skip 1 sc, make a Hdc 2 together as shown in the last 2 sts, ch 1.
Tie it off.
Weave in the ends with a needle.
Adding a loop, leaf, and vine
Attach to the top of the stem with a ch, ch 29, slst to the very first ch that you attached to the stem.
If you would like to add a little something extra your garland, then try one of these options! A leaf or a curl.
The curl is extremely easy, just ch 16 after you finish slsting to the pumpkin top, work into the second ch from the hook, put 3 scs in each ch back up the 15 chs. Then continue working your string.
The leaf is slightly more complicated, and you will have to cut your yarn when you’re done.
Ch 6, you will work all sts in to the 3 rd ch from the hook, make 2 hdc, ch 2, slst to the first ch,
*make 3 hdcs, ch 2, slst to the first ch,* repeat – 3 more times, make 2 hdcs, ch 2, slst to the middle.
Tie off and weave the end around the bottom sts, cinch it closed, weave it once more to secure it, snip the tail.
What to do with it.
From here you can hang it from just about anywhere you want! You can use it as an ornament on a harvest tree or off of cabinet nobs.
Alternatively you can turn these into a garland like this:
Ch 30, *slst to the top of the hdc 2 together, ch 30, * repeat for as many as you like.

Color really does set the tone for how a project will feel. So change out the orange for this witchy purple and the brown for black and you have these awesome haunted looking pumpkins. You can make the pumpkin black with a dark green stem too. I love how fantastical and gothic these upcycled crochet pumpkin ornaments look with a simple color change!
