5 Things To Do While You Crochet

The struggle of finding time for what you want to do is very real. When you have more than one thing you like to do, which, let’s face it, is most of us, it can seem like you’re making progress on one thing, while leaving something else in the dust.

For me reading is one of my favorite things to do, but it can also be time consuming. As you know, crocheting is my go to activity and man, can it take a long time to do. These are two great affinities that you can’t really do at the same time.. or can you? Hmmm, what else can you do while crocheting?

Let’s find out in this post…5 things you can do while crocheting!

1. Meditation

Taking time for meditation is good for your mental and physical health. There are quite a few ways to meditate, but for this I think mindfulness meditation would work best.

This is based on being mindful or having an increased awareness and acceptance of living in the present moment. You broaden your conscious awareness and focus on what you are doing and experience during meditation. Such as the flow of your breath, the rhythm of your hook going in and out of your work, the movement of your hand feeding the yarn to your hook, the feeling of the yarn in your hands, and the color(s) of your yarn. Observe your thoughts and emotions as you crochet and truly experience the act of crocheting.

2. Prayer

This one is very much a personal thing based on your belief system. The best I can do is give an example.

I once met a lady who would do her rosaries while she crocheted blankets for her loved ones. She called them her prayer blankets.

I thought it was a great idea, regardless of your religion. I suppose the base of it would be to pray for/think of the someone you are crocheting for in a positive way.

3. Cook

I know this one probably sounds off the wall. How can you cook when your attention is on crocheting? The easiest answer is slow cooker meals! There are a few ways to cut down your cooking time and I’ve found some videos on YouTube to show you how.

Meal preparation can go hand in hand with slow cooker meals, one pot meals, and casseroles. Regardless of where or how you get your recipes, or if you use one, the point is to have more time for the important things… Like your latest WIP (work in progress).

4. Audio books

I love a good mystery, but it’s pretty much impossible to read while crocheting. That’s why audio books are such a good option for us crocheters. I know that audio books can be quite expensive, but there are quite a few free options if you’re a fan of the classics.

You can try Librivox which is public domain site that allows people to listen to classic books read by volunteers. Jane Eyre is one of my favorites and this is a good version Jane Eyre.

YouTube can be a good option for free audio books as well, but it’s kinda hit or miss and there’s a chance that videos can be taken down. However, I love Agatha Christie’s The Secret Adversary and this is an awesome audio version on YouTube The Secret Adversary.

The local public Library is always available to you and they usually have audiobooks avalible.

If you don’t care too much about “free” then you can always look into Audible. They have an extensive, ever growing library of audio books. It’s about 15 bucks a month and you get 1 credit every month that’s good for any audio book regardless of price (as far as I’ve seen). *Audible (they have a 1 month free thing going on right now)

I’m not sponsored, but I do use them myself so I thought I’d share. Right now I’m listening to Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce.

5. Music

Listening to music is a great thing to do while stitching. Try picking music that fits the pace you would like to crochet at. Your heart beat will match the beat of the music and your hands will try and join in the rhythm. I like making different playlists for my crocheting time based on my favorite songs, genera, and pace.

Sometimes I put on ambient music instead, my favorite is the YouTube channel Ambient World it does Lord of the Rings, Outlander, Hogwarts, Skyrim, Disney park music, Nature sounds, and much more.

That’s it for now, what’s your go to thing to do while crocheting? Was it on the list? Tell me in the comments!

  1. I normally watch TV when I crochet or should I say I crochet when I watch TV, I can sometimes miss a bit of the plot of a story but I find if I look up at regular intervals I don’t miss much. I have read paper books at the same time as crocheting though it is a bit tricky. Of course the radio is also a possibility, either a play or these days Formula 1, because in the UK it’s the only free way to follow the races live.

    1. I like to rewatch favorite TV shows or movies, because if I’m writing a pattern I miss a lot or miss count lol. I think I tried reading once, my crochet ended up going by the wayside so to speak. Radio is always nice though, music too. 😊
