Granny stitchs and squares are a classic and with good reason! It makes a beautiful, draped fabric that you can make unique with color choices, variations, and borders. The granny triangle is just as useful and more importantly just as easy!
What are granny triangles?
Granny triangles are a simple repeating pattern that has set areas where you always make increases for the project to become larger.
You can use this pattern as a swatch to get used to it or if you think you’ve got it down, just continue the pattern to the size you like for a full triangle shaped shawl.
Supplies
- Any yarn you would like
- I’m using (4) for the swatch Big Twist in soft purple
- Any appropriate hook for your yarn
- I’m using an K/6.5 mm hook
- Snips
- Yarn or tapestry needle
Abbreviations
- Dc = double crochet
- Ch = chain
- Slst = slip stitch
- Mc = magic circle
The Granny Shawl Pattern
I like using a magic circle, but you can substitute it with chaining 4 and connecting the ends with a slip stitch.
Foundation row. Make a Mc, ch 4, make 3 Dcs, ch 3, make 3 Dcs, ch 1, make 1 Dc.
Granny Triangle Row 1.
Row 1. Ch 4 (this counts as 1 dc and 1 ch), put 3 Dcs in the very first ch space, ch 1, put 3 Dcs in the next ch space, ch 3, put 3 more Dcs in the same ch space, ch 1, put 3 Dcs in the next ch space, ch1, Dc in to the 3rd ch.
This is a break down of the last step of each row. The last Dc should be in the 3rd ch of the previous row.

Row 2. Ch 4, Dc 3 in the first ch space, ch 1, Dc 3 in the next ch space, ch 1, put 3 Dcs in the large ch space, ch 3, put 3 more Dcs in the same ch space, ch 1, dc 3 in the next ch space, ch 1, Dc 3 in the last ch space, ch 1, put 1 Dc in the 3rd ch.

Ch 4, Dc 3 in the first ch space, ch 1, Dc 3 into the next ch space, ch 1, Dc 3 in the next ch space, ch 1, Dc 3 in the next ch space, ch 1, put 3 Dcs in the largest ch space, ch 3, put 3 more Dcs in the same ch space, ch 1, Dc 3 into the next ch space, ch 1, Dc 3 into the next ch space, ch 1, Dc 3 into the next ch space, ch 1, Dc 3 into the last ch space, ch 1, Dc into the 3rd ch.
From here you can continue the pattern or tie it off and use it as it is!
Suggestions for this pattern
This wonderful variation of the granny square can easily become a shawl, just keep increasing to your desired size.
This granny is so customizable, you can use a chunky (5) yarn with a smaller hook, like a I/5.5 mm, to make one that’s prefect for a cold winter.
Or use a Dk (3) yarn with a J/6 mm for staying comfortable on a mild summer night.
- Make an even larger, thicker triangular shawl by using a super chunky (6) yarn and a J/6mm or K/6.5 mm hook. This method will make it extra warm.
- Use a fingering or light weight (2 or 3) yarn and a N/9 mm hook or larger to get super light spring or summer time shawl.
- Use fingering (2) or light weight (3) yarn with a G/4 mm hook or smaller to make a light triangular scarf.
Here are some ideas to use the swatch as it is.
- You can use a bunch of them as pieces for a blanket.
- Use multiple triangles to make a table runner.
- String several of them with a long string or piece of yarn to use as a garland.
